Students should understand the formulas required to find the area of a rectangle and a triangle. A triangle is half of a rectangle, therefore the formula is 1/2 of the product of the length and width (called a base and height in a triangle). The height must always form a 90 degree angle with the base, meaning that the height can never be the slant height, or slanted leg, of a triangle.
